The hindbrain behaves differently,

...depending on when and where it is enabled. The two instances you mentioned are acceptable because they are cases where the hindbrain's behavior is not deleterious to anyone. However, if you were to suddenly lose the ability to maintain forebrain control during a time of emotional stress I bet you'd hurt someone (yourself or someone else)!

By the way ... I have always had a great deal of trouble releasing full control to my own reptile brain (sort of the opposite of the Hrenne problem). I can communicate with it just fine (dreams, hunches, consciously induced mental imagery, self-hypnosis, etc). But I can't remember a single time that I have ever been awake and not consciously in the "driver's seat" (as it were). There have been times that I have done things I later regretted (i.e., emotional responses to stressful situations). Could those be considered hindbrain taking-over?
